Abrahamic Covenant

Deuteronomy 7:9
Know therefore that the Lord your God is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations,
Made with Abraham and his descendants, but including us who are his descendants by faith!
With 3 parts: the promise of blessing, the promise of the land and offspring

PART 1: THE PROMISE OF BLESSING

Genesis 12:1-3 ESV
[1] Now the LORD said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you. [2] And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. [3] I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”
THE POINT IS GOD WANTED TO BLESS THE WHOLE WORLD BUT START WITH ONE MAN, ONE NATION.
The initial promise has 7 smaller promises!
Genesis 12:2-3 ESV
[2] And I will make of you a great nation,                       (EVENTUALLY ISRAEL)
and I will bless you and
make your name great,                                                          (AS A MAN OF GOD)
so that you will be a blessing.                                (BLESSED TO BE A BLESSING)
[3] I will bless those who bless you,
and him who dishonors you I will curse,              (GOD WILL VINDICATE HIM)
and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”          (FULFILLED BY JESUS)
Abraham was 75 here!
The fulfillment of this covenant is seen in the history of Abraham’s descendants and in the creation of the nation of Israel. The worldwide blessing came through Jesus Christ, who was of Abraham’s family line.
PART 2: THE PROMISE OF LAND AND OFFSPRING
Genesis 13:14-17 ESV
[14] The LORD said to Abram, after Lot had separated from him, “Lift up your eyes and look from the place where you are, northward and southward and eastward and westward, [15] for all the land that you see I will give to you and to your offspring forever. [16] I will make your offspring as the dust of the earth, so that if one can count the dust of the earth, your offspring also can be counted. [17] Arise, walk through the length and the breadth of the land, for I will give it to you.”
Genesis 15:4-6 ESV
[4] And behold, the word of the LORD came to him: “This man shall not be your heir; your very own son shall be your heir.” [5] And he brought him outside and said, “Look toward heaven, and number the stars, if you are able to number them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring be.” [6] And he believed the LORD, and he counted it to him as righteousness.
Abraham was 85 by now!
PART 3: THE COVENANT
Genesis 17:1-10 ESV
[1] When Abram was ninety-nine years old the LORD appeared to Abram and said to him, “I am God Almighty; walk before me, and be blameless, [2] that I may make my covenant between me and you, and may multiply you greatly.” [3] Then Abram fell on his face. And God said to him, [4] “Behold, my covenant is with you, and you shall be the father of a multitude of nations. [5] No longer shall your name be called Abram, but your name shall be Abraham, for I have made you the father of a multitude of nations. [6] I will make you exceedingly fruitful, and I will make you into nations, and kings shall come from you. [7] And I will establish my covenant between me and you and your offspring after you throughout their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your offspring after you. [8] And I will give to you and to your offspring after you the land of your sojournings, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession, and I will be their God.” [9] And God said to Abraham, “As for you, you shall keep my covenant, you and your offspring after you throughout their generations. [10] This is my covenant, which you shall keep, between me and you and your offspring after you: Every male among you shall be circumcised.
MADE WITH ABRAHAM AND HIS PEOPLE
God will be their God, and give them land and a nation, a multitude of nations.
Walking blameless before God and Circumcision were the requirements and also the sign that Abraham believed the covenant…
The Abrahamic Blessing is meant to be passed on to us who have faith!
Romans 4:16 ESV
[16] That is why it depends on faith, in order that the promise may rest on grace and be guaranteed to all his offspring-not only to the adherent of the law but also to the one who shares the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all,
Galatians 3:7-9 ESV
[7] Know then that it is those of faith who are the sons of Abraham. [8] And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, “In you shall all the nations be blessed.” [9] So then, those who are of faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith.
Galatians 3:13-14 ESV
[13] Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us-for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree”- [14] so that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promised Spirit through faith.
So we are the recipients of this covenant:
– blessing and favour
– blessed to be a blessing
– God’s protection
– salvation through faith in Jesus
Genesis 15:6
[6] And he believed the LORD, and he counted it to him as righteousness.
