Adamic Covenant

Deuteronomy 7:9
Know therefore that the Lord your God is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations,
God’s character is marked by faithfulness.  In order to demonstrate His faithfulness to us, scripture is marked with seven covenants.

What is a covenant?  It is an agreement between two parties that cannot be broken by any generation, leads to great mutual benefit but if one party fails to fulfil their side the consequences can be disastrous.
These seven covenants fall into three categories—conditional, unconditional, and general.
Conditional covenants are based on certain obligations and prerequisites; if the requirements are not fulfilled, the covenant is broken.
Unconditional covenants are made with no strings attached and will be kept regardless of one party’s fidelity or infidelity.
General covenants are not specific to one people group and can involve a wide range of people.
The conditional covenant mentioned in Scripture is the Mosaic Covenant; the blessings it extends are contingent upon Israel’s adherence to the Law. The unconditional covenants mentioned in the Bible are the Abrahamic, Land, and Davidic Covenants; God promises to fulfill these regardless of other factors. The general covenants mentioned are the Adamic, Noahic, and New Covenants, which are global in scope. The covenants are:
It was between God and Adam and Eve, but in fact applies to everyone!
Found in Genesis 1:26-30 and 2:16-17, this covenant is general in nature. It applies to everyone!
It included the command not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, pronounced a curse for sin, and spoke of a future provision for man’s redemption (Genesis 3:15).
What Was the Agreement?
Genesis 1:26-31 ESV
[26] Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” [27] So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. [28] And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” [29] And God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food. [30] And to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the heavens and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food.” And it was so. [31] And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.

Genesis 2:15-17 ESV
[15] The LORD God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it. [16] And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, “You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, [17] but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”

  1. You are blessed
  2. Be fruitful and multiply
  3. Be the ruler of the earth
  4. Work the garden and eat and enjoy it!
  5. But don’t eat from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil
Consequence – DEATH!
THEY DID EAT AND DEATH CAME TO THEIR SPIRITS – THEY WERE CUT OFF FROM GOD
The Punishment:
Genesis 3:14-19 ESV

14 The Lord God said to the serpent,

“Because you have done this, cursed are you above all livestock and above all beasts of the field; on your belly you shall go, and dust you shall eat all the days of your life. 15 I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.

16 To the woman he said,

“I will surely multiply your pain in childbearing; in pain you shall bring forth children. Your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you.”
17 And to Adam he said,
“Because you have listened to the voice of your wife and have eaten of the tree of which I commanded you, ‘You shall not eat of it,’ cursed is the ground because of you; in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life; 18 thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you; and you shall eat the plants of the field. 19 By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread, till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”
GOD PUT THE CURSE ON THE SNAKE AND ON THE LAND
BUT WE ARE NOW ALL UNDER THE CURSE OF PAIN, SUFFERING AND SPIRITUAL DEATH
BUT GOD IN HIS FAITHFULNESS….
2 Timothy 2:13
13 if we are faithless, he remains faithful— for he cannot deny himself.
Genesis 3:15 ESV
[15] I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”
ON THE CROSS SATAN BRUISED THE HEAL OF JESUS BUT AT THE SAME TIME JESUS CRUSHED THE DOMINION OF SATAN
Galatians 4:4
But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons.
Romans 3:21-24
21 But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it— 22 the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,
