The Issues of the Heart

Our hearts are the most important part of us to God.
The condition of our hearts truly reflect who we are and our relationship with God.
The Holy Spirit lives in our hearts so we need to steward them well!
1. God looks at the Heart
1 Samuel 16:7 ESV
[7] But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the LORD sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks on the heart.”
Matthew 5:8 ESV
[8] “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
Jeremiah 29:13 ESV
[13] You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart.
Matthew 15:8 ESV
[8] “‘This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me;
We get saved through our hearts:
Romans 10:9-10 ESV
[9] because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. [10] For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.
So, what is the condition of our heart?
2. We need to Steward our Hearts
Proverbs 4:23 ESV
[23] Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.
Matthew 15:18-20 ESV
[18] But what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this defiles a person. [19] For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, slander. [20] These are what defile a person. But to eat with unwashed hands does not defile anyone.”
How do we steward our hearts?
A. Get rid of these things that eat up our hearts:
  • Crushes and Fantasies – unmet expectations
  • Sins like jealousy and lust
  • Guilt and shame
  • Fear
  • Unforgiveness
  • Bitterness
  • Unbelief (hardness)
B. Allow God’s peace to come and rule in our hearts:
John 14:27 ESV
[27] Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.
Philippians 4:7 ESV
[7] And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Colossians 3:15 ESV
[15] And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful.
3. God wants our hearts pure to live in us and use us
Romans 5:5 ESV
[5] and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.
John 7:38 ESV
[38] Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.'”
Let’s pray for God to purify our hearts and use us!
