Noahic Covenant

Deuteronomy 7:9
Know therefore that the Lord your God is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations,
God’s character is marked by faithfulness.  In order to demonstrate His faithfulness to us, scripture is marked with seven covenants.
It was made with Noah and all his descendants – which is us! It is unconditional.
“I establish my covenant with you, that never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of the flood, and never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth.”
The story that led to this:
  • Multiple generations passed since Adam and Eve
  • Noah’s great great grandfather, Enoch was born and he walked with God and was taken up to heaven!
  • Noah’s great grandfather, Methuselah was born (Noah’s father was Lamech)
  • Angels came and interbred with men, leading to giants (Nephilim) and corrupted flesh
  • Mankind became extremely corrupt
  • God could not take man’s corruption any longer:
Genesis 6:5-8
The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And the Lord regretted that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him to his heart. So the Lord said, “I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land, man and animals and creeping things and birds of the heavens, for I am sorry that I have made them.” But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord.
  • When Noah turned 500 God said He would destroy the earth
  • When Noah turned 600 the ark was ready and Methuselah died
  • God wanted to preserve mankind and the animals but remove the corruption
  • God told Noah to bring his wife and sons and their wives, 8 people in all.
Genesis 6:18
18 But I will establish my covenant with you, and you shall come into the ark, you, your sons, your wife, and your sons’ wives with you.
Genesis 7:11-16
11 In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, on the seventeenth day of the month, on that day all the fountains of the great deep burst forth, and the windows of the heavens were opened. 12 And rain fell upon the earth forty days and forty nights. 13 On the very same day Noah and his sons, Shem and Ham and Japheth, and Noah’s wife and the three wives of his sons with them entered the ark, 14 they and every beast, according to its kind, and all the livestock according to their kinds, and every creeping thing that creeps on the earth, according to its kind, and every bird, according to its kind, every winged creature. 15 They went into the ark with Noah, two and two of all flesh in which there was the breath of life. 16 And those that entered, male and female of all flesh, went in as God had commanded him. And the Lord shut him in.
Then the flood happened and they were in the ark for one year and 10 days probably.
Genesis 9:1-17
1And God blessed Noah and his sons and said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth. The fear of you and the dread of you shall be upon every beast of the earth and upon every bird of the heavens, upon everything that creeps on the ground and all the fish of the sea. Into your hand they are delivered. Every moving thing that lives shall be food for you. And as I gave you the green plants, I give you everything. But you shall not eat flesh with its life, that is, its blood. And for your lifeblood I will require a reckoning: from every beast I will require it and from man. From his fellow man I will require a reckoning for the life of man.

“Whoever sheds the blood of man,
by man shall his blood be shed,
for God made man in his own image.

And you, be fruitful and multiply, increase greatly on the earth and multiply in it.”
Then God said to Noah and to his sons with him, “Behold, I establish my covenant with you and your offspring after you, 10 and with every living creature that is with you, the birds, the livestock, and every beast of the earth with you, as many as came out of the ark; it is for every beast of the earth. 11 I establish my covenant with you, that never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of the flood, and never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth.” 12 And God said, “This is the sign of the covenant that I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all future generations: 13 I have set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth. 14 When I bring clouds over the earth and the bow is seen in the clouds, 15 I will remember my covenant that is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh. And the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh. 16 When the bow is in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth.” 17 God said to Noah, “This is the sign of the covenant that I have established between me and all flesh that is on the earth.”
“I establish my covenant with you, that never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of the flood, and never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth.”
This covenant included a sign of God’s faithfulness to keep it—the rainbow.
But God will one day destroy the earth (but not by flooding)
2 Peter 3:9-10
The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance. 10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed.
The lessons we learn:
  1. God is faithful
  2. Man is corrupt
  3. God is holy and He has very high standards
  4. God provides a way to salvation (it is not a man-made thing)
  5. It is the same with Jesus – He is the ark, provided by God to shelter us from God’s coming wrath and bring us to peace (the dove) (1 Thessalonians 1:10).
  6. God restored the previous covenant mandate he made with Adam but now with meat-eaters!
1 Thessalonians 1:9-10 ESV
[9] For they themselves report concerning us the kind of reception we had among you, and how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God, [10] and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, Jesus who delivers us from the wrath to come.
HAVE YOU ESCAPED GOD’S WRATH AND ENTERED INTO THE GRACE AND MERCY PROVIDED BY SALVATION IN JESUS?
