9 Know therefore that the Lord your God is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations,
The Land Covenant was made with Israel, from the time of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob then renewed with Moses and Joshua, for all the Jews for all time!
Genesis 13:14-17 ESV
The LORD said to Abram, after Lot had separated from him, “Lift up your eyes and look from the place where you are, northward and southward and eastward and westward, for all the land that you see I will give to you and to your offspring forever.
18 On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying, “To your offspring I give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphrates, 19 the land of the Kenites, the Kenizzites, the Kadmonites,20 the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Rephaim, 21 the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Girgashites and the Jebusites.”
And I will establish my covenant between me and you and your offspring after you throughout their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your offspring after you. And I will give to you and to your offspring after you the land of your sojournings, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession, and I will be their God.”
Moses and Joshua:
8 and I have come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that land to a good and broad land, a land flowing with milk and honey, to the place of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites.
“And when all these things come upon you, the blessing and the curse, which I have set before you, and you call them to mind among all the nations where the Lord your God has driven you, 2 and return to the Lord your God, you and your children, and obey his voice in all that I command you today, with all your heart and with all your soul, 3 then the Lord your God will restore your fortunes and have mercy on you, and he will gather you again from all the peoples where the Lord your God has scattered you. 4 If your outcasts are in the uttermost parts of heaven, from there the Lord your God will gather you, and from there he will take you. 5 And the Lord your God will bring you into the land that your fathers possessed, that you may possess it. And he will make you more prosperous and numerous than your fathers. 6 And the Lord your God will circumcise your heart and the heart of your offspring, so that you will love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, that you may live. 7 And the Lord your God will put all these curses on your foes and enemies who persecuted you. 8 And you shall again obey the voice of the Lord and keep all his commandments that I command you today. 9 The Lord your God will make you abundantly prosperous in all the work of your hand, in the fruit of your womb and in the fruit of your cattle and in the fruit of your ground. For the Lord will again take delight in prospering you, as he took delight in your fathers, 10 when you obey the voice of the Lord your God, to keep his commandments and his statutes that are written in this Book of the Law, when you turn to the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul.
15 “See, I have set before you today life and good, death and evil. 16 If you obey the commandments of the Lord your God that I command you today, by loving the Lord your God, by walking in his ways, and by keeping his commandments and his statutes and his rules, then you shall live and multiply, and the Lord your God will bless you in the land that you are entering to take possession of it. 17 But if your heart turns away, and you will not hear, but are drawn away to worship other gods and serve them, 18 I declare to you today, that you shall surely perish. You shall not live long in the land that you are going over the Jordan to enter and possess. 19 I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Therefore choose life, that you and your offspring may live, 20 loving the Lord your God, obeying his voice and holding fast to him, for he is your life and length of days, that you may dwell in the land that the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them.”

God promised to give the land of Canaan, from the Jordan River in the East to Sinai in the south to the Mediterranean Sea in the West to southern Turkey in the north. The land today is modern Israel, parts of Egypt, Syrian, Jordan and the West Bank.
The allocation of the land was unconditional, but the occupation of the land was conditional on Israel’s worship of God and fulfilment of the Mosaic covenant. They would be blessed if they obeyed and scattered if they did not.
But God would always be faithful to bring them back again.
This happened twice:
- The Babylonian Captivity during the time of Jeremiah and subsequent rebuilding of Jerusalem under Nehemiah, Ezra and with help from king Cyrus the Great;
- Then the destruction of Jerusalem in A.D. 70 by the Roman legions
- Then various Aliyah (people returning to Israel) since 1888
- Then the eventual reinstatement of the nation of Israel in 1948.
SEGWAY: MOSES COULDN’T ENTER IN! BUT JESUS TOOK HIM!
Not all these promises could be fulfilled before Jesus returns, so He will complete them!
19 So we see that they were unable to enter because of unbelief.
8 For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken of another day later on. 9 So then, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God,
What do we learn from this?
- God’s promise of the land given to Israel is never-ending
- But the fulfilment of the covenant will be made when Jesus the Messiah returns
- It is not a spiritual land (Heaven), it is a physical country (Israel)
- Israel has not been replaced by the church as some have taught, but it is also a picture of our inheritance!
- The land is given to Israel so that they can be a blessing to all the nations, e.g. the Queen of Sheba and Jonah
- Satan hates God’s promises and always tests them
- So this land will always be controversial
- But Jesus will return to Israel itself and rule the world from Jerusalem!
- If the Jewish nation positioned themselves in God’s favour they were abundantly blessed.
- The work of Jesus on the cross has positioned us perfectly in God’s favour so we too will inherit salvation, eternal life and the new Jerusalem!
